Sylvia (Shuler) Byers

Sylvia (Shuler) Byers, 89, of Palmyra, passed away on October 12, 2023, in Palmyra, PA. She was born Monday, October 1, 1934, to the late Chester E. and Laura Grace (Maderia) Shuler. She is predeceased by her loving husband since Decmeber 14, 2022, R. Lee Byers, whom she married on June 9, 1957, in Stone Church of the Brethren in Huntingdon, PA.

Sylvia earned her degree in education from Juniata College, Pennsylvania and continued her education at Penn State University where she earned her master’s degree. She continued on to teach elementary age children in Elizabethtown and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Rochester, New York. She also worked at the church’s daycare center at Long Hill Chapel, New Jersey. Most importantly, Sylvia’s career was to raise her own children. In her spare time, she was quite artistic, she enjoyed cross stitching, ceramic painting, and singing. In her youth, Sylvia would sing and played both the piano and organ in churches. She participated in the woman’s bible studies and supported numerous Christian ministries. Sylvia was a prayer warrior and avid reader, specifically the Bible, which she would read through about once a year. More than anything, she will be remembered for her love for family, Christ, and outbursts of laughter!

She is survived by her children: Timothy L. Byers and wife Rita S. Wechter, Anne Marie Coryell and husband Brett, Stephen J. Byers and wife Cherie A., and Lara B. Casteel and husband Michael W. Riley, Sr; grandchildren, Elijah Coryell and wife Danielle, Amber Mattson and husband Travis Mattson, Zackery Coryell and wife Meredith, Caleb J. Byers, Grace A. Byers, and Kierstin J. Casteel; great-grandchildren, Foster and Layton Coryell. She is preceded in death by her son-in-law, R. Brett Casteel.

Services will be private per family request.
