Robert Edward Sands

Robert Edward Sands, 76, of York, formerly of Hershey, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 6, 2014 in his home. He was born Monday, September 27, 1937 in Hershey to the late Thomas E. and Arlene E. (Gingrich) Sands. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Shirley (Kaufman) Sands.
Robert was an avid gardener; he enjoyed working in his flowerbeds and pruning his trees. He had a great passion for reading, particularly books on history, archeology, and Indian Studies and collecting Native American artifacts. Robert enjoyed cheering for his favorite football team, the Penn State Nittany Lions. Most importantly he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by a daughter, Susan M. Sands; 2 grandchildren, Alexandra Rausch and husband Erik and Dominic Frittelli; and a faithful feline companion, Cappuccino. He was predeceased by a daughter, Julia K. Sands; and a sister, Janet Murray.
A graveside service will be held at 1 PM on Thursday, July 10, 2014 in Gravel Hill Cemetery, 54 Gravel Hill Rd, Palmyra 17078 with The Rev. Susan Q. Claytor officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to Rothermel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 25 W. Pine St., Palmyra, PA 17078.
