Edward Barry Obituary

Edward John Barry, 87, of Palmyra, formerly of Annville and Lebanon, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 27, 2021 in Cedar Haven Healthcare Center, after a brief illness.
He was born Friday, June 30, 1933 in Menallen Township, Fayette County, PA, to the late John and Josephine (Szurek) Barry.  He was predeceased by his loving wife Barbara Ann (Furman) Barry on Wednesday, September 15, 2010.

 

He is survived by two sons, Gene Barry and wife Lorraine of Palmyra and Doug Barry and wife Bonny of Harrisburg; two grandchildren, Brian Barry and wife Whitney of TX and Nicole Black and husband Daniel of VA; two great grandchildren, John Luke Charles Barry and Addilyn Marie Black. 

 

He graduated from Centerville High School in 1951, Waynesburg College in 1957 with a BA in English, Spanish & History where he was a standout two sport athlete playing football and basketball, earned his Masters in Education from Millersville College in 1979.  On June 9, 1956 he married his college sweetheart, Barbara Ann. 

 

He was a gifted educator and coach who had a lasting impact on students and athletes during his time at Mapletown High School in Mapletown, Warren High School in Warren, McGuffey High School in Claysville, Curwensville High School in Curwensville, Bald Eagle Area High School in Wingate and St. John’s Military Academy in Delafield, WI.  He taught English from 1971 to 1989 at Lebanon High School where he served as football coach from 1971 to 1973, yearbook advisor for 15 years and Athletic Director for 8 years from 1982 to 1989. 

 

He coached at Millersville College and served as Athletic Trainer and coach at Lebanon Valley College.  He served as director of the Lebanon YMCA Midget Baseball Program from 1974 to 1982, coached the Optimist Teener League Baseball Team and served as Lebanon Optimist Club President from 1978-1979.

 

He was a 50 year member of the Masons, most recently at the Mt. Lebanon Lodge #226 F&AM, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Zembo Temple Shrine.
