Bonita “Bonnie” D. (Wolfgang) Hawk, 80, of Elizabethtown, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning May 2, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family.
Born in Pottsville, PA, on September 20, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Mae and Mark Walkinshaw & Warren Daniel Reed, and sister of the late Roxanne R. Alleman.
Bonnie was the loving wife of the late William “Bill” A. Hawk who passed away in 2001. She was a 1960 graduate of Williams Valley High School. Bonnie was a retired tax examiner from the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue where she worked for 30 years. She was a member of St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bainbridge, the Elizabethtown Flower Club and the Elizabethtown Women’s Club.
Bonnie was a devoted mother and family matriarch to her three daughters – Diana, Kris and Jody. There are many fond memories of her getting all 3 girls ready for school every morning before starting her workday, then preparing a home cooked supper for her family every night. Her selfless devotion and service to others over multiple generations followed her throughout her life.
Bonnie especially loved spending time with her large, beloved family, making delicious meals and wonderful, fun-filled, memories. She was affectionately known as “Mammy”, the baby whisperer who loved and cuddled every one of the 22 others who came into her family as if they were her own babies!
Bonnie also enjoyed cooking, eating good food, gardening and birds. We will especially miss her homemade spaghetti sauce, apple dumplings, potato salad, and halupkis. She passed her love of PA Dutch cooking onto her children and extended family. Bonnie enjoyed spending her retired days reading books on her settee for an afternoon, bird watching, and delighting in the antics of the neighbor’s children. She was a loyal daughter who treasured her nightly 8:45pm phone call to her mother every evening that sadly ended when Grandma became too ill to continue. Grandma left us just one year ago at the age of 97.
Surviving are her 3 daughters - Diana Greene (Bob Greene) of Elizabethtown, PA, Krista Hawk Carlow ofWest Chester, PA and Jody Hawk (Harry Jarman) of Milford, DE; 9 grandchildren - Keri Splain, Frank Splain III (Kim), William Splain (Sara), Alyssa, Mia and Ana Carlow, Nicci Safar (John Mark), Jessica and Eddie Jarman; 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great granddaughters. Yes, until Grandma passed away last May we were a 6-generation family.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Visitation & Service on Friday May 5th, 2023, at St. Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 106 N. 2nd Street in Bainbridge, beginning at 12pm. The Funeral Service will follow at 1pm. Bonnie will be laid to rest beside her husband, Bill, at Mount Tunnel Cemetery in Elizabethtown, PA. Following the Graveside Service, a luncheon and time of fellowship will be held for those wishing to join in a celebration of Bonnie’s life.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bonnie’s memory can be made to St. Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 106 N. 2nd Street, Bainbridge PA 17502.
