Dr. William K. Moore, 100, of Elizabethtown, died on Tuesday,
September 25, 2012 at Masonic Village, Elizabethtown. Born in
Watsontown, PA on October 23, 1911, he was the youngest of four sons of the late William Maxwell and Helen (Lowrie) Moore. He was the husband of the late Dorothy F. (Fox) Moore with whom he shared 57 years of marriage.
Dr. Moore was a 1929 graduate of Milton High School and entered Penn State University the same year. In 1934 he enrolled at Temple University School of Dentistry and graduated in 1938 after serving as president of Psi Omega Dental Fraternity. He opened a dental practice in Elizabethtown in 1938 and retired in 1986 at 73 years of age.
Dr. Moore served in the United States Naval Reserve Dental Corp as a lieutenant (jg) at the Naval Air Station in Norfolk, VA in 1944 and 1945. He held life memberships in the American Dental Society and the Lancaster Dental Society where he served as a director and president in 1956-1957. He was also a member and past director of the Lancaster County Medical Bureau.
He started the first dental clinic at Masonic Village (known then as the Masonic Homes) and spent 37 years volunteering in that endeavor. He also served as Elizabethtown Area School District dentist for 30 years.
Dr. Moore was the oldest living member of Christ Church, United Church of Christ, where he served as an elder, a deacon, held all offices of consistory and was chairman of the property committee for 45 years. A past master and 72 year member of Abraham C. Treichler Lodge #682, F&AM, he also served as a trustee. He was also a member of Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, Harrisburg Consistory and Zembo Temple, Harrisburg.
A charter member and past president of the Elizabethtown Lions Club, he became a Melvin Jones Fellow in recognition of his 69 years of service to the club.
Dr. Moore was a director of the Elizabethtown Trust Company, which became Farmers First Bank (now Susquehanna Bank) where he was assistant secretary for many years. He was also a director and past president of the Elizabethtown Building and Loan Association and a member of the Elizabethtown Chamber of Commerce. He held continuous membership of over 60 years in the American Legion and was a longtime member of the Hershey Country Club.
In retirement, Dr. Moore continued to enjoy two of his life long
interests, gardening and woodworking. Another beloved activity was participation in the Men’s Chorus at Masonic Village.
Dr. Moore is survived by a daughter, Mary Jane (Molly) Morris, wife of Jerry E. Morris of York; a granddaughter M. Susan Williamson and her husband Alex of Medina, OH; a grandson Eric S. Morris and his wife Heather of York; five great grandchildren: Ian and Ross Williamson, and Maxwell, Trevor and Yishi Morris.
In addition to his wife who passed away in December of 1996, Dr. Moore was preceded in death by their daughter, Sarah Ann (Sally) Moore who died in June 1969. He will be laid to rest beside them at a private burial in Mount Tunnel Cemetery.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at Christ Church United Church of Christ, 247 South Market Street,
Elizabethtown, PA 17022 at 11:00 AM with his pastor, Rev. Carol A. Bender, officiating. There will be no viewing. The family will receive friends at a luncheon immediately following the service.
