Shirley Jean Averill, a proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star, passed away peacefully with her husband, Ken, by her side, holding her hand on May 18, 2025, at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, PA. She was 82 years old and had been a cherished resident there for many years.
Born on October 30, 1942, Shirley was the daughter of the late Alfred and Jeanette Baxter. She spent her childhood in East Lansdowne, PA, alongside her younger sister, Linda. Shirley graduated from East Lansdowne High School and began working as a secretary in various offices, including for the Harlem Globetrotters. Several years later, she pursued and earned an accreditation as an administrative professional from the International Association of Administrative Professionals.
Shirley continued her career as an administrative assistant in Guest Services, supporting many professors at Haverford College. Her exceptional talents led her to similar roles at various area banks, including a stint as the Executive Assistant to the Bank President at Main Line Federal Savings Bank for many years. She also dedicated several years to the Main Line Chamber of Commerce. Throughout her distinguished career, Shirley was highly respected and admired by her colleagues and co-workers for her professionalism and unwavering commitment.
Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Tracie, and her former husband, Lane. She is survived by her devoted husband, Ken; her loving daughter, Michelle; her three cherished grandsons, Cole, Luke, and Nolan; her sister, Linda; and many dear friends and family, including her beloved grand-dog, Stanley. Shirley took immense pride in being called “Mimaw,” an endearing name given to her by her grandsons, to whom she dedicated her life. She could often be found cheering them on in hockey rinks across the East Coast, in auditoriums in West Chester, and on athletic fields throughout the county.
Beyond her family, Shirley found joy in many pursuits. She enthusiastically served in various roles within the Order of the Eastern Star, enjoyed ceramics and knitting, had a special affinity for birds, and treasured family vacations to destinations such as Portugal, Walt Disney World, Boston, Cancún, and numerous trips to the beaches of New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware.
Later in life, Shirley’s life was transformed when she met Ken. They were married in 2009 at the picturesque lighthouse in Havre De Grace, MD. Together, they shared a full and vibrant life, marked by countless trips, outings with friends and family, and the warmth of their home at the Masonic Village, where they often enjoyed drives through the surrounding gardens and walks through the underground tunnels. Additionally, Shirley treasured the numerous beautiful sunsets with her family.
Shirley will be remembered for her hearty laugh, her giving heart, and her great sense of humor. Her grandsons often described her with the phrase, "Life is Good." She was the heart and soul of our family, and she will be sorely missed.
A memorial service celebrating Shirley’s life will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at 10:30 AM at the Grand Lodge Hall of the Masonic Village, 71 Freemason Drive, Elizabethtown, PA 17022, in the Solarium.
