SFC (Ret) George Joseph Mootz, U.S. Army, 76, of Palmyra, passed away following a brief illness on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 in the MS Hershey Medical Center. He was born Wednesday, November 13, 1946 in Pottsville to the late George Robert and Helen Mary (Minnick) Mootz. He is survived by his loving wife Susan E. Mootz.
He graduated from Nativity BVM High School in 1964 and began his 21-year career in the U.S. Army. He served during the Vietnam War, served overseas, and earned many decorations medals and citations including Expert M-16 Rife and Sharpshooter Rifle. He was a civilian contractor mechanic at Fort Indiantown Gap and later drove truck for JP Donmoyer. He was a member of the Annville and Palmyra VFW, Annville and Hershey American Legion. He enjoyed traveling with Sue and his family, especially to Key West. He loved all things FAST—boats, cars and life! His infections smile and larger than life personality will be missed by all who knew him. He would want to remind everyone, “Don’t forget to sign the book!”
He is survived by five children, Tammy Mootz Kemfort and husband Ron of Pottsville, Jennifer Keener and companion Jeremy Herman of Mechanicsburg, Benjamin Mootz and wife Christy of Annville, Kelly Miller and husband Jason of Elkton, MD and Daniel Menear of Delmar, MD; seven grandchildren, Marion Harding, Evan Keener, Kyle Kemfort, Megan Keener, Maddy Mootz, Isaak Bonilla and Ryan Bonilla; three great-grandchildren, Kailee Harding, Logan Harding, and August Kemfort; three sisters, Cathy Huber, Maria Stesko and husband Dale and Ellen Walters and husband Harry. He was predeceased by a wife, Joy (Rothacker) Mootz; a 13 year old brother, Jimmy Mootz.
Family and friends are invited for visitation on Thursday, July 13th from 1 to 3 PM at Rothermel-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 25 West Pine Street, Palmyra, PA 17078. A period of food and fellowship will follow in the celebration room at the funeral home. Private burial with full military honors will take place in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
