J. Samuel Parrett, Jr.

J. Samuel Parrett, Jr., 89, of Elizabethtown, entered into the Heavenly Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Lancaster General Hospital.

Born in Rheems, PA on July 27, 1926, he was the son of the late Jonas S. Parrett, Sr. and Eva B. (Bernhart) Parrett and was the husband of the late Louise (Fisher) Parrett to whom he was married for 67 years.


Mr. Parrett was a member of Mt. Calvary Church, Elizabethtown.

A native of Elizabethtown, he was a graduate of Elizabethtown Area High School, the Central Pennsylvania Business College and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers University.  Additionally, Mr. Parrett held graduate certification in Commercial Banking from the American Institute of Banking and he completed the Pennsylvania Bankers Association School at Penn State and Bucknell Universities.

During World War II, he served as a First Class Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy supply division with service in northern Africa, the invasion of southern France as well as the advanced radio warning system in Puerto Rico.

Following his military service, he began his banking career in 1948.  At his retirement in 1983, he was the Vice President and Branch Coordinator of the Commonwealth National Bank System, Harrisburg.

His professional and civic memberships included Director of Elizabethtown Water Company; past preside of Elizabethtown Lions Club; Elizabethtown Chamber of Commerce member; director and past president of Elizabethtown Welfare Association; past president and treasurer of Elizabethtown Credit Bureau; director and treasurer of Elizabethtown Junior Chamber of Commerce; director and treasurer of Elizabethtown Y.M.C.A.; a member of Elizabethtown Planning and Zoning Commission as well as serving as a board member for the Elizabethtown Area School Board.

Mr. Parrett enjoyed playing golf, camping, fishing and in his younger years, football, baseball and boxing.  Above all, he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, neighbor and friend.

He will be lovingly missed by a daughter, Dr. Joan Parrett, Ph.D.; a sister, Ruth Lebo, of York; a brother, Bernard Parrett and wife Dee, of Harrisburg; a granddaughter, Priscilla Parrett, Esq., as well as Samuel’s extended family and caring friends.

Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at Mount Tunnel Cemetery, 1058 South Market Street, Elizabethtown, PA  17022   Following the burial, visitation from 11:30-12:30 and a memorial service from 12:30-1:30 PM will be held at Mt. Calvary Church, 625 Holly Street, Elizabethtown.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the Miller-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory, 130 North Market Street, Elizabethtown, PA  17022, 717-367-1543.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Parrett’s memory to the Missionary Fund at Mt. Calvary Church or to the Central Penn (Youth) Volleyball Program and mailed to the Church.  Condolences and memories may be shared at www.MillerFuneralHome.com.
