Tribute to Mother Ruth Metzler Longenecker

Ruth M. Longenecker of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, was born July 23, 1918 and died on Monday, July 28, 2014 after a brief illness. The oldest daughter of the late Abram H. Metzler and Sadie L. Metzler, she is survived by her daughters Marian L. Beaman, Janice L. Caverly, both of Jacksonville, Florida, Jean L. Fairfield of North Wales, PA, and a son, Mark M. Longenecker, Rheems, PA. and her sister-in-law Ruth M. Longenecker.

For many years, Ruth’s husband Ray owned and operated Longenecker Farm Supply in Rheems, PA along with their son Mark. Also with her husband and sister-in-law Ruth farmed tomato crops in Bainbridge for many years.

A faithful member of Bosslers Mennonite Church, she mailed bulletins to missionaries and shut-in members and served in the Sewing Circle, piecing quilts and knotting comforters for overseas relief.

Her life was characterized by service in other areas. With her husband Ray, she served on the Board of New Life for Girls, an agency supporting the rehabilitation and guidance of young women in urban areas. For many years she volunteered at the Mennonite Home making beds. She served also at the MCC International Gift and Thrift Shop in Mt. Joy and helped stamp books for distribution by Choice Books, Inc. A gifted cook, she gave many donations of homemade canned goods and pies.

Ruth will be dearly missed by all her friends and family, including 8 grand-children and 18 great-grandchildren, all of whom she remembered each year with birthday cards. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray M. Longenecker, her brothers, Landis Metzler, Leroy Metzler, Rev. Clyde Metzler, Abram Metzler, and a sister Verna Brenneman, wife of Paul Brenneman.

Funeral services will be held at 11am on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Bossler Mennonite Church, 2021 Bossler Road Elizabethtown, PA 17022. Viewing will be from 9:30am until 11am on Saturday in the church.
