Mary Verna Wetzel—School Secretary

Verna Wetzel, 96, of St. Anne’s Retirement Community, Columbia and formerly of Mount Joy, passed away peacefully Monday morning, August 31, 2015 at St Anne’s.  Born in Harrisburg, she was the daughter of the late Paul B. and Suzanna (Black) McMullen.  Her husband, Charles A. Wetzel, died in 1958.

Verna graduated from Maytown High School in 1937.  She retired from the Elizabethtown Area School District in 1981 where she was an elementary school secretary for 20 years.  Verna worked part-time for Union Community Bank in Maytown.  Additionally, she was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church in Lancaster where she was a volunteer.  Verna also volunteered for the St. Anne’s Home Auxiliary, working in the gift shop, was a member of the Pennsylvania and Lancaster County Retired Public School Employee’s Association and Gold Star Wives of America.

Verna enjoyed traveling, golf, card club and reading.  Above all, she will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

She will be lovingly missed by a son, James R. Wetzel, husband of Donna H. Wetzel, of Lancaster as well as two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Carol Ann and a sister, Jean A. Grubb.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, September 5, 2015 in the Chapel at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, 3952 Columbia Avenue, Columbia, PA  17512 with the Rev. Quentin E. Wallace, Senior Pastor of Covenant United Methodist Church, officiating.  Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to visit with the family following the service on Saturday.  Private Interment will be in the Mount Joy Cemetery at the convenience of the family.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the Smedley-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory, 29 North Gay Street, Marietta, PA  17547.
