Margaret “Penny” Lewis passed away August 3, 2023 at Masonic Village in Elizabethtown. She was 82.
Born July 18, 1941 to Henry Sheldon Millington and Margaret Jones Millington, Penny was a resident of Palmyra and Elizabethtown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Lewis Sr. She is survived by three children, Warren Jr. (Terry) of Savannah, Ga., Gregory (Theresa) of Palmyra, and Douglas (Tina) of Palmyra; six grandchildren, Patrick (Molly) of Hershey, Nicholas (Theresa) of Lebanon, Tyler (Julia) of Philadelphia, Hannah Lambrou (Peter) of Savannah, Ga., Dillon of Washington, D.C., and Michael of Lancaster; four great-grandchildren; and many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Like many other women of her generation, Penny was a dedicated homemaker and stay-at-home mother. She selflessly committed herself to filling the lives of her beloved husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with unconditional love and support. And Penny’s work often extended far beyond the home she built and into the community she loved. Having attended the Mount Vernon Seminary in Washington, D.C. and Pine Manor Junior College in Wellesley, Mass., she proudly helped build several businesses, including Klick-Lewis Chevrolet, as her husband Warren’s most trusted adviser and confidante. She courted clients, kept books, maintained perspective, and, most importantly, committed to seeing the best in people at times when it was difficult to do so. She was as intelligent as she was elegant; an invaluable partner in life and business.
She cared deeply about Central Pennsylvania, where she spent most of her life, and the people who call it home. She especially admired causes that benefited local families and children. Among the organizations, projects, and initiatives that she helped to raise money for and supported were the Caring Cupboard, the redevelopment of Fireman’s Park in Palmyra, and Palmyra’s 250th Anniversary celebration.
Penny celebrated color and beauty, not just in the spirits of the people with whom she surrounded herself and loved, but in the natural world. She was a meticulous gardener, cultivating her own garden with an ever-blooming array of plants and flowers, and patronizing the many botanical and public gardens throughout the region.
She cherished curiosity and nurtured creativity, and especially enjoyed watching them blossom in her children and grandchildren. They each will fondly remember the countless concerts, plays, aquariums, zoos, historic sites, libraries, and playgrounds she took them to throughout their lives and will gratefully carry her spirit with them as they pass her enduring love on to their own children and grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held by the family.
