L. Eugene Wingert, 74, of Elizabethtown passed away unexpectedly in his home on Monday, December 19, 2016. He was born Tuesday, November 17, 1942 in London, Ontario, Canada to the late Chester Franklin and Ruth Elizabeth (Taylor) Wingert. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Darlene R. (Dohner) Wingert.
Eugene was a 1965 graduate of Messiah College and received his Masters of Divinity from Ashland (Ohio) Seminary in 1972. His life’s work was in ministry and he spent 4 years in Hillman, MI, 6 years in Nappanee, IN, 22 years at Kenbrook Bible Camp in Lebanon, 10 years at the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, and 2 years in Zambia ministering to the community. He enjoyed the outdoors and kept busy gardening, hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, kayaking, wind surfing, winter camping, skiing, to name a few. Most importantly he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother who will be dearly missed.
He is survived by a daughter, Sara Beth Wingert; a son, Timothy Dohner Wingert; a grandson, Kyden Lowell Wingert; and 2 siblings, Lois E. Einolf and Donald L. Wingert.
Family and friends are invited for a viewing on Monday, December 26, 2016 from 5-7 PM at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St., Elizabethtown 17022. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 10 AM at the Elizabethtown BIC. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in New Guilford Cemetery, Chambersburg, PA. Arrangements have been entrusted to Miller-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Kenbrook Bible Camp, 190 Pine Meadow Rd., Lebanon 17046 or to South African Women’s Education Fund, 504 Groff Ave., Elizabethtown 17022.
