Larry R Long, 70, of Palmyra, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, June 7, 2014. He was born Saturday, June 26, 1943 in Lebanon to the late Walter B. and Hannah (Fox) Long. He is survived by his loving wife Christine L. (Dunlap) Long.
Larry had retired from a 40-year career at the Hershey Company, where he was manager of product standards development and maintenance. Larry coached and mentored Palmyra VFW baseball players for 18 years. Many young men in Lebanon County still know him as “LL”. He had a big impact on the players that he coached! He also coached Little League baseball in the Palmyra Civic Baseball Association for a number of years. For many years, Larry played and enjoyed slow pitch and fast pitch softball for the First United Methodist Church team.
After graduating from Annville Cleona High School in 1961, He proudly served in the U S Army in the Armor Corp. Larry was an avid and loyal Phillies fan, and a very avid golfer. Larry loved Jimmy Buffet as well as the Eagles Band. He loved vacationing at the beach with his family. He enjoyed cruising the islands with his wife, Chris and friends. He enjoyed interacting with his grandchildren in all their sporting events, as well as playing with them in the family pool. His favorite hobby when he wasn’t playing golf was woodworking and building furniture in his workshop.
In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by three sons, Bruce, Scott, and Nathan and their spouses; two daughters, Traci and Danielle and their spouses; two nephews, Barry Books, Bobby Long and their spouses. His greatest joy was spending time with his children and his 14 grandchildren. He was loved and respected by his family, his many, many friends, and colleagues, and his sense of humor brightened their lives. He was predeceased by three brothers, Mervin, Earl, Walter; and a sister, Lois.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 13 th at 11 AM at Rothermel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 25 West Pine Street, Palmyra, PA 17078 with Rev. Douglas Smith officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Grandview Memorial Park, Annville. Family and friends are invited for viewing on Thursday, June 12 th from 6 to 8 PM and Friday from 10 AM until time of the service at the funeral home.
