Joseph Ralph Ponessa, 87, of Palmyra, passed away with family by his side on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at Lebanon Valley Home in Annville. He was born Sunday, February 7, 1926 in Lebanon to the late Constantino and Maria (Chiarelli) Ponessa. He is survived by his loving wife Georgette Frances (May) Ponessa.
He proudly served our country in the United States Navy during WWII. Joseph retired from Bethlehem Steel and Palmyra Area Schools maintenance department. He was a faithful member of the Church of the Holy Spirit, a member of the Rexmont Fire Company, and a former member of Cornwall Hunting and Fishing Club. Most importantly he was a loving husband and father.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter, JoAnn R. Ponessa. He is predeceased by 3 brothers, Frank, Constantino, Jr., and William Ponessa; and 3 sisters, Sarah Leibig, Angeline Ponessa, and Mary Coleman.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, February 10th at 11 AM at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 245 W. Pine St., Palmyra, 17078 with Father James F. Podlesny as celebrant. Family and friends are invited for viewing on Sunday, February 9th from 6-8 PM at Rothermel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 25 W. Pine St., Palmyra 17078 and on Monday at the church from 10 AM until time of the service. Burial will follow in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Palmyra.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 867, Hershey, PA 17033.
