John Herman Alger, 83, of Hershey, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home. He was born Wednesday, January 6, 1932 in Hershey to the late Herman and Violet (Myers) Alger. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Anna “Nancy” (Henry) Alger.
He graduated from Hershey High School in 1949 and spent his career in business and farming. He had a servants heart and gave graciously in many ways, including serving on the boards of the Palmyra Area School District; Lebanon County Vocational Technical School, 12 years as president; Lebanon Valley Brethren Home; member of Campbelltown Volunteer Fire Company; and a lifetime of service to his church including lay leader, president of the administrative board, and Sunday school teacher for over 60 years. All who know him will miss his warm smile, subtle humor, and loving heart.
He is survived by two sons, Steven J. Alger and wife Susan of Campbelltown, and Benson E. Alger and wife Pam of Hershey; a daughter, Major Amy B. Irvin, U.S.M.C. (Ret.) and husband Rev. Mark of Lewisburg, TN; five grandchildren, Brooks Alger and wife Ashley of Winston Salem, NC, Jenni Alger of Mount Joy, Hollis Alger of Campbelltown, Jonathan Alger of Hershey, and James Alger of Campbelltown; a brother, Rev. Earl E. Alger and wife Nancy of Norwell, MA. He was predeceased by a brother, Harvey R. Alger.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 24th at 11:00 AM at Campbelltown United Methodist Church, 2760 Horseshoe Pike, Campbelltown with Rev. Denise M. Founds, Rev. Mark Irvin, and Rev. Earl E. Alger officiating. Private burial will take place in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Palmyra. Family and friends are invited for viewing on Friday, January 23rd from 6 to 8 PM at Rothermel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 25 West Pine Street, Palmyra, PA 17078.
