Jay R. Greider, Jr.

Jay R. Greider, Jr., of Elizabethtown, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, December 11, 2015, at Pleasant View Retirement Community in Manheim, Pa. Born July 20, 1923, in Lancaster, PA, he was the son of the late J. Roy and Ada Risser Greider.
On January 2, 1943, he married Valeria M. Hartman of Union County, who survives at Pleasant View Retirement Community.
He was a graduate of Maytown High School and a 1943 Penn State graduate of the two year Poultry Science Program. He enlisted in the US Army serving his country during World War II in the Pacific Theater and in the Korean Conflict at Valley Forge Army Base.
He was the president, and along with his brother Bob, the owner of Greider Leghorn Farms, Rheems, PA.
Jay lived a life of service. He was an active member of St Paul’s United Methodist Church, Elizabethtown. He served on the Board of Directors of Cornwall Manor, and as a director of the American Egg Board. He was a member of Elizabethtown Lion’s Club where he was a past president and regional director. Jay, for many years, donated the eggs, organized the painting and planned the Lion’s Easter egg hunt held in the community park for area children.
He is survived by his wife and two children, Patricia A. Hock (Winand), of Boalsburg, Kenneth R. Greider (Cynthia), of Elizabethtown; five grandchildren, Kristina Hock, State College, Laura Hock Phillipps (David), Greenwich, CT, Rachel, Philadelphia, Phillip and Hannah, Elizabethtown; great grandchildren, Emily, John, Kaitlyn and Peter Phillipps; a sister, Lilly Ann Greider Nichol (William), State College; sister-in-law, Miriam Longenecker Greider, Mt. Joy; and nieces, Nancy Nichol Myers (Craig), Carol Greider Smedley (Rick), and Pamela Greider Wahl (Greg).
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother J. Robert Greider and a niece, Linda Greider Myer (Jon).
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at the Miller-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory, 130 North Market Street, Elizabethtown, PA 17022 with Pastor Skip Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Risser Mennonite Cemetery, Elizabethtown with military honors. There will be a viewing from 10 AM until the time of the service on Wednesday.
