James R. Herr, Sr.

James R. Herr, Sr., 94, of Elizabethtown, passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Elizabethtown, he was the son of the late Saylor S. and Cora W. (Stroh) Herr. He was the husband of Carolyn K. (Kendig) Herr. They would have been married 68 years on March 21, 2014.

Jim was an 83 year member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Elizabethtown. He was a US Army Air Corps veteran and spent 28 months on the Fiji Islands during WWII. He retired in 1974 from the US Postal Service where he was employed as a rural letter carrier.
James was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Elizabethtown Historical Society, Hans Herr Foundation, Friendship Fire & Hose Company, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association.

In addition to his wife Carolyn, he is survived by a daughter, Judy H., wife of Robert Hirst, Elizabethtown; two sons: James R., Jr., husband of Deborah Herr, Elizabethtown; David J. Herr, Ephrata; four grandchildren: Justin, Kate, Sean and Joe; two great grandchildren: Olivia and Jackson; and will be lovingly missed by his dog Lacy.

Jim was an avid story teller and loved to talk about the time he spent in th Fiji Islands. He was also knowledgeable about Elizabethtown's history and the folks who lived here. In his early retirement he spent 7 summers in Rehoboth Beach, DE, where he enjoyed fishing and fraternizing with the locals on the beach. Jim also loved auto racing and watching sports on TV.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Miller-Sekely Funeral Home & Crematory, 130 North Market Street, Elizabethtown at 2:00 PM. Viewing will be from 1:00 PM until the time of service. Interment will take place in Mount Tunnel Cemetery, Elizabethtown.
