Glenn E. Hummer, 81, of Elizabethtown, loving father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away on Thursday, September 27, 2012 at Masonic Village surrounded by his family. Born in Harrisburg June 23, 1931, he was the son of the late Charles and Myrna (Rudy) Hummer. Glenn was preceded in death by Joanne Reed Hummer his loving wife of 61 years, his beloved grandfather, William Rudy of Harrisburg, and grandson Todd Kaylor.
He was a three-letter sportsman at his alma mater Susquehanna Township High School. He graduated in 1949 and began working as a dispatcher at Shirk’s Trucking/ Norwalk Trucking. In 1957 he established Hummer’s Delicatessen, opening in the “Big M’ in Middletown, PA. In 1961, he moved his operation to the Market Basket in Elizabethtown. He owned and operated Hummer’s Delicatessen until his retirement in 1996, passing it on to his son’s currently operating as Hummer’s Meats based in Mount Joy, PA.
Glenn was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Elizabethtown for over 50 years. He was an avid Philadelphia Sports Fan who never thought the Phillies had a bad season. Glenn was also a member of Abraham C. Treichler Lodge #683, F&AM, Elizabethtown. Faith and family were central to Glenn’s Life.
He is loved and will be missed by his five children, two daughters: Linda, wife of Bob Kaylor; Vicki, wife of Bob Dolan; three sons: Steve Hummer; Jeff Hummer, husband of Mindy and Doug Hummer, husband of Cindy; 11 grandchildren: Stacy (Tymm) Neece, Lisa (John) Orvos, Keri (Aaron) Wright, Sean (Lisa) Dolan, Shannon (Victor) Alvarez, Andrew
(Kristina) Dolan, Drew (Krystal) Hummer, Ryan (Jeannine) Hummer, Mitch (Morgan) Hummer, Rick (Jen) Hummer and Jackie Hummer; and 22 great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, October 1, 2012 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 North Locust Street, Elizabethtown at 11:00 AM. Friends may call on Sunday, September 30, 2012 at St.
Paul’s United Methodist Church from 6:00-8:00 PM. There will be no viewing on Monday. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
