George W. “Bud” Shuman, 94, of Lancaster and formerly of Elizabethtown, passed away on Friday, November 29, 2013 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Marietta, he was the son of the late William E. and Pearl (Swarmer) Shuman and the husband of Betty F. (Deitrich) Shuman. They celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary on November 20.
George retired in 1974 as Postmaster of the Elizabethtown Post Office. Previously, he was employed at Olmsted Air Force Base, Middletown, as a production control supervisor. A 1937 graduate of Marietta High School, George served in the US Navy during WWII. He was an active member of the First Church of God of Elizabethtown for over 70 years, where he served on church council, taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and was a Life Elder. His love of church history resulted in the formation of a historical room. George was also a member of the Lancaster County Postmaster’s Association , the VFW, American Legion and the NARFE. He was also an avid sports fan.
In addition to his wife Betty, he is survived by two daughters: Patricia K., wife of Benjamin Hoffman, Elizabethtown and Jacqueline E., wife of Larry Gainer, Mount Joy; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister Edith Sload, a brother Ray Shuman and a great grandson Benjamin R. Hoffman.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at the First Church of God, 144 South Market Street, Elizabethtown at 12:00 Noon. Viewing will be from 11:00 AM until the time of service. Interment will take place in Crossroads Cemetery, Mount Joy.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Elizabethtown First Church of God.
