Frances Green Shaub, 90, died Monday, June 1, 2015 at the Mount Joy Hospice Center following a brief illness.

Born April 28, 1925 in Hagerstown, MD, Frances Green grew up in nearby Smithsburg where she helped her family run a small farm and general store.  She graduated high school in 1943 as class valedictorian and attended business school before deciding to study nursing.  She was a 1946 graduate of the Jefferson School of Nursing in Philadelphia, PA.  While working at Jefferson she met a young medical student, Howard Shaub, Jr., during his rotation in the maternity ward. They married in November 1947.

After many moves and the births of five children, she settled on a farm in Central Manor Township, Lancaster County.  In addition to overseeing the renovation of a 1860's farmhouse and caring for her family, she joined the Brethren Church and assisted 4-H programs.

A decade later, she followed her husband to Hollidaysburg, PA where she was a longtime resident and active member of the community.  She devoted many volunteer hours to her church, YMCA Auxilary, Meals on Wheels and at local nursing homes.  With her husband, she ran a private medical laboratory.  In retirement, Frances returned to her Lancaster farm where she enjoyed gathering with friends and family, gardening and the outdoors.  In recent years, she resided at the Brethren Village where she was well known for her expertise at the game of Scrabble and for her love of chocolate.

Preceded in death by her husband of 60 years and eldest daughter, Barbara Andrew, she leaves behind daughter Nerissa Long of Santa Fe, NM, sons William and Mark of Boulder, CO, and daughter Elaine Hunt of Buffalo, NY; grandchildren Matt Hosey, Rachel Williams, Netisha Massaffra, Ashley Andrew, Jacob Shaub, Forest Shaub, Jacqueline Kramer, Mick Shaub, Vivian and Willow Hunt; 8 great- grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cherished friends.

A viewing will be held at the Mountville Church of the Brethren, 60 Clay Street, on Saturday, June 6 beginning at 10 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. service and celebration of her life.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Smedley-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory, 29 N. Gay St., Marietta, PA 17547.  Condolences and memories may be shared at www.smedley-finkenbinder.com

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Frances' name to Mt. Joy Hospice and Community Care, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, Mount Joy, PA, 17552 and to the Lancaster Farmland Trust, 125 Lancaster Ave., Strasburg, PA, 17579.
