Florence E. Thompson, PhD — known as Flo, Mom, Floey, Sauce, or Grandma-Flo (aka G-Flo), made her grand entrance on June 6, 1944. Born on D-Day, her baby book aptly described her as the family’s very own "little invasion," and she spent the next 81 years living up to that spark.
Flo was wickedly smart, armed with an immense vocabulary and a love of books. A fierce defender of proper grammar, she was likely the one who knew the meaning of the word, AND how to spell it.
That brilliance flowed into everything she touched. She was truly a creative soul, whether she was whipping up an amazing meal, knitting, sewing, or folding intricate origami. She loved sharing those skills, and if you were lucky enough to know her, you probably have a piece of her handiwork—or a clipping from her Christmas cactus. Those plants now bloom at Christmas and Easter in homes everywhere, serving as a living, flowering reminder of her green thumb and generosity.
As a child psychologist, Flo had a magical way of communicating with kids. She was approachable, trustworthy, and sincerely curious, helping hundreds of children find their footing over the years.
Flo found immense joy in exploring the world. Whether she was traipsing through Central America and Europe with friends or discovering the heart of Italy with her daughter, Kristi, and grandson, Sam, she embraced every journey. She truly cherished the unique tastes, sights, sounds, and people of every country she visited.
In her final days, Flo was deeply moved to hear from so many people about the impact she had on their lives. It is humbling to see how many hearts she’s occupied.
She leaves behind a legacy of sharp wit, beautiful art, and a family that knows the difference between “there" and "they’re." The "invasion" may have ended, but Flo’s influence is permanent.
Her daughter, KristiAnn (Hammonds) Wasson, son-in-law, Chip Wasson, and grandsons, Sam and Tate Wasson will have stories to share about G-Flo in the years to come. She left a trail of funnies along the way.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to Hospice of Central PA. This truly extraordinary organization provided a dignified, caring, and beautiful pathway for Flo’s passing. Contributions can be sent to Hospice of Central PA, 1320 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110, or online at www.HospiceofCentralPA.org.
