ELMER E. HITZ

Elmer E. Hitz, 93, of Conewago Township, Dauphin County, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2013 at the M.S. Hershey Medical Center.

He was born on June 13, 1920 in Rapho Township, Lancaster County to the late Amos & Stella (Ober) Hitz.

Elmer started out working as a house parent for the M.S. Hershey School Unit #52, followed by the Reading Railroad, then on the family farm, and later went to work for the Hershey Chocolate Co. as a mechanical laborer and after retirement he worked as an auctioneer’s helper for Schaffner Auctions.

He was a former Conewago Township Supervisor, a member of BCTW Local #464 and the Rough & Tumble Thresher men’s Assoc.

He was a member of the former Shenk’s Brethren in Christ Church, and was a former caretaker of Shenk’s Community Cemetery.

He was the widower of Emma L. Hitz, and was preceded in death by a brother Jacob Hitz, two sisters Elizabeth MacAfee and Mary Hartman.

Surviving are four sons Elvin E. Hitz and his wife Donna of Elizabethtown, Galen D. Hitz and his wife Linda of Elizabethtown, Jacob L. Hitz and his wife Nancy of Elizabethown, John A. Hitz of Elizabethtown, two daughters Ann M. Hitz of Elizabethtown, Katharine J. Hitz of Elizabethtown, a sister Florence M. Shank of Marietta, two brothers George R. Hitz of Manchester, Jay M. Hitz of Mount Wolf, nine grandchildren Lisa, Crystal, Jeffrey, Douglas, Bradley, Elizabeth, Lauren, Lance, Logan, 10great grandchildren Rachel, Brayden, Ainsley, Skylar, Josh, Zachary, Ethan, Kyle, Shawn and Brooklynne. Also surviving is his close friend and caregiver Zantha Weaver.

Graveside services will be held at 1pm on Friday, January 3, 2014 at Shenk’s Community Cemetery.
