Donna Galterio Brown, 74, a resident of The Middletown Home and formerly of Norwalk, CT, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 19, 2022.
Born July 21, 1947 in New Rochelle, NY, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Catherine (Roberts) Galterio. She was raised in Port Chester, NY, later moving to Norwalk, CT. She married Richard “Dick” Brown on August 13, 1983, and was married 21 years until he passed away in November of 2004.
Donna attended Ridge Street School and Port Chester High School, and received her bachelor’s degree in political science in 1969 from American University in Washington, D.C. Following the completion of her undergraduate education, she remained in the Washington, D.C. area and assisted with student programs such as Close Up and Presidential Classroom for Young Americans. It was while working with these programs that she discovered how much she enjoyed working with students, and upon returning to the New York area she completed her master’s degree in education at Manhattanville College.
Donna began teaching at Rye Country Day School in Rye, NY in 1975 where she continued working for over 30 years. During her career at RCDS, her 6th grade Social Studies classroom became renowned for the many arts and crafts projects throughout the curriculum, such as creating Medieval castles and shields. Students had the opportunity to express themselves through these projects, and they were displayed throughout the halls of the school each year allowing all those who passed through to enjoy them.
Watching Yankees baseball was a passion of Donna’s, and it was rare that she ever missed a game. She could tell you just about anything you wanted to know about The Yankees, just don’t ever mention that other team from Boston! Donna was talented with knitting and needlepoint and made beautiful pieces that her family still cherishes. She could often be found reading a good book in her spare time, regularly reading through a couple a week. She loved pop music from the 1950’s and 1960’s, yet also found enjoyment in listening to the Backstreet Boys with her daughter, Katie. Donna often made trips with her family to visit her parents after they had moved to Cape Cod, MA in the late 1970’s, typically spending holidays there. She enjoyed taking vacations with family throughout the years, most often visiting parts of Florida and California. Her home remained in Norwalk, CT until 2017 when she relocated to Pennsylvania to be closer to Katie, where she immensely enjoyed spending time with her grand-dog, Kayla.
Donna is survived by her daughter Katie (Brown) Adamsky and husband Chris of Palmyra, PA; her sister Denise (Galterio) Klein and husband Fred of Holliston, MA; her brother Ken Galterio and his fiancé Tammy McNutt of Seabrook, TX; as well as nieces, a nephew, cousins and extended family. She will forever be in the memories of the lives that she touched.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life ceremony to take place in Rye, NY, with the date of the ceremony soon to be announced.
