Claude Henry Frey of Elizabethtown died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012 at Rheems Nursing Home in Elizabethtown. He was born Oct. 3, 1924, the son of Elias T. and Fannie S. Daveler Frey. The ninth of thirteen children, Claude was born on the family farm on Rutts Road and attended Rutts School, a one-room school near his home.
Claude lived his entire life on the Frey farm except from 1945 through 1946 when he volunteered in the Civilian Public Service. During his service, he worked at the camp in Grottoes, VA and later on a farm at Sterling, Massachusetts. After his father’s death in 1946, Claude and his mother were partners in the family farm. He took care of his mother for 32 years.
He was a member of Elizabethtown Mennonite Church and also attended Falmouth United Methodist Church at Bainbridge in recent years. He was well known in his community and was a regular at Rutts Auction and other auctions.
He is survived by sisters Mary Frey Ritchie of Timberville, VA, Erma Frey Schnabel of Souderton, Pa, Nancy Frey Longenecker of Lancaster, Pa, and Fannie Lois Frey of Elizabethtown, and one brother J. Wilbur Frey of Lancaster, and numerous nieces and nephews. One sister, Dorothy Frey, and six brothers, J. Harold, Paul, Martin L., Ralph E., Elias D. Jr., and Earl D. Frey, preceded him in death.
Services will be held on Friday, September 21, 2012 at Elizabethtown Mennonite Church, 300 South Spruce Street, Elizabethtown, PA 17022 at 2:00 PM. Burial will take place in Elizabethtown Mennonite Cemetery on Bear Creek Road, Elizabethtown at 1:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to Elizabethtown Mennonite Church.
