Charles R. Wells, 98, born and raised in Elizabethtown, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 10, 2026 with family by his side. He was born November 22, 1927 to the late George W. and Eva B. (Kipp) Wells. He is predeceased by his loving wife Christine M. (Kreamer) Wells.
Charles was a proud United States Navy veteran who served in the Pacific aboard the U.S. Minesweeper 123 and the USS San Saba. His service to his country was a source of lifelong pride and reflected the quiet strength and dedication that defined his character.
He was deeply committed to education and learning. After earning his Bachelor of Science degree from Elizabethtown College and a Master of Science degree from the University of Pennsylvania, he continued pursuing knowledge well beyond his formal studies. Charles devoted his professional life to teaching high school science in King George, VA, North Whales, PA, and at Eastern York, PA where he inspired generations of students before retiring in 1989. His excellence in the classroom was recognized numerous times — he was selected five times as an Honors Teacher of Chemistry by the Chemical Industrial Council, received the Walen Memorial Science Award as Science Teacher of the Year, and was honored with the Outstanding Citizen Award by WSBA Radio.
Beyond his career, Charles found joy in the simple and meaningful things in life. He loved spending time fishing, taught himself the art of oil painting, and took great pride in maintaining his property. He was a dedicated member of the American Legion for over 70 years and a faithful member of Christ Church United Church of Christ in Elizabethtown.
More than any accomplishment, Charles cherished his family. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose steady presence and wisdom shaped the lives of those who knew him. The depth of his kindness was especially evident near the end of his life, when many former classmates and students visited him — a testament to the lasting impact he had on others.
He is survived by his children, Sharon Cless and husband Richard, Stacy Flowers and husband Jeffrey, and Chuck A. Wells and wife Grace; grandchildren, Alisha Greenawalt, Daniel and Adam Cless, Kirstin Reed, Joshua Flowers, Jereme and Julee Wells; and fifteen great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his brother, George Wells.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 13, 2026 at 2 pm at Christ Church United Church of Christ, 247 S. Market St., Elizabethtown, PA 17022. Visitation will take place from 1 pm until the start of the service. Burial will follow the service at Mount Tunnel Cemetery, Elizabethtown with full military honors.
