Charles Elmer Roland, 86, of Longwood Manor, Maytown, formerly of Elizabethtown, passed away on Sunday, November 4, 2012 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born April 26, 1926 in Elizabethtown, he was the son of the late Russel Deibler and Ruth (Evans) Roland.
Charles was a 1944 graduate of Elizabethtown High School. He served in the US Navy during WWII. He graduated from Lebanon Valley College with a Bachelors degree in physics and then went to Columbia University and earned a Master’s degree in physics. Charles worked as an engineer for RCA, Lancaster in the Color TV Department. He then started his own business with partner Harry Reese, R&R Electroplating in Elizabethtown.
An accomplished musician, he played the clarinet, oboe and saxophone in the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra, the Bainbridge Band and the New Holland Band. He served with the New Holland Band in many capacities including: treasurer, helping to establish the band museum and traveling to Europe with them.
He and his wife Marty traveled extensively in foreign countries and took several cruises. He was a 74 year member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown. He was also an avid reader.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Martha (Gibbons) Roland,
Maytown; a sister Mary (Harold) Royer, Elizabethtown and nine nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by two brothers: Paul R. and Gerald H. Roland.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at
Miller-Sekely Funeral Home & Crematory, 130 North Market Street, Elizabethtown at 2:00 PM. Friends may call from 1:00 PM until the time of service.
Interment will take place in Mount Tunnel Cemetery, Elizabethtown.
