Carl “Chick” Kane, 85, of Elizabethtown, passed away on Tuesday, June 24. He was married to Lana Diane (Greiss) Kane for 64 years. A native of Collingdale, PA, Carl was the son of the late Florence (Rohr) and Charles F. Kane.
An avid athlete in high school, Carl played both football and basketball. As center, guard, and linebacker for the Collingdale Bulldogs, he became the only high school football player to make All-Delaware County in two different positions two years in a row. He received his bachelor’s in health and physical education from West Chester State College in 1961 and his master’s in education from the same university.
Carl was much praised as line coach and later head football and track coach at Hempfield High School in the 1960s. He was soon recruited as head football coach at Bridgewater-Raritan High School in NJ, where he spent only one semester before being recruited as freshman football coach at Millersville State College in 1965. Carl worked at Millersville for more than 30 years, first as freshman football coach and later as varsity line coach and offensive coordinator. He also coached track and field and swimming and taught multiple courses in health and physical education.
Carl was interested in healthy eating, exercise, and physical activity all his life, interests he shared with his wife Lana. Together, they rode both tandem and racing bikes, competing in races throughout the United States. They later became avid race walkers and runners, participating in local, state, and national competitions.
Additionally, Carl enjoyed vegetable gardening, camping, and spending time with his grandson.
He was preceded in death by his brother Charles Franklin Kane, who was killed in action in Vietnam. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lana Diane Kane; his daughter, Kimberly Kane and her husband, Jan Erik Lindquist; his grandson, Kennet Lindquist; his son, Carl Kane, Jr.; and his brother, Walter “Chipper” Kane and his wife, Lisa; as well as nephews, nieces, and other extended family members whose lives he touched in meaningful ways.
