Bonnie Jean (Smith) Kenderdine, 90, an elementary school teacher for 30 years, passed away May 2 at Lancaster General Hospital. She was born in Ohio to Albert W. and R. Estella Smith on August 22, 1922.

Bonnie graduated from Ohio University in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

For the majority of her career, Bonnie taught third and fourth grades at East High Street, Mill Road and Rheems elementary schools in Elizabethtown, Penn. She also taught in Albany and Bucyrus, Ohio; Honolulu, Hawaii; and Middletown, Penn. She retired in 1983.

A member of the Elizabethtown Business and Professional Women’s Club, she was honored with its Woman of the Year award in 2005. She served on the executive board of the Elizabethtown Historical Society and the education, hospitality and nominating committees of the Elizabeth Hughes Society. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown and the Elizabethtown Chapter 407 Order of the Eastern Star for 50 years. She also served on the Elizabethtown Republican Committee for 10 years and helped work the polls at each election.

Bonnie was always gracious and generous with her time and talents, and she enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by a sister, Martha E. Zaccor of California; a son, David A. Kenderdine, married to Gloria J., of Lititz; a grandson, Chad A. Kenderdine of Greensburg, Penn.; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca Espenshade Kenderdine of Elizabethtown; two granddaughters, Susan A. Kenderdine of Selinsgrove, Penn.; and Anne K. Kenderdine, married to Matthew N. Hobbs, of Takoma Park, Md.; and two great-granddaughters, Ivy K. Hobbs and Phoebe R. Hobbs.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Henry S. Kenderdine Sr.; a son, Henry S. Kenderdine Jr.; a sister, Donna J. Upp; and a grandson, Jason T. Rhinier.

A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on May 7 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. Interment will follow the service at Conestoga Memorial Park, Lancaster. Light refreshments with family and friends to follow at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Miller-Sekely Funeral Home & Crematory, 130 N. Market St., Elizabethtown 17022.
