Benjamin H. Elwell, 91, formerly of Palmyra and Aldan, PA, died on Sunday, November 4, 2012 at the VA Medical Center in Lebanon. Born in Canton, NJ, he was the son of the late Frank and Henrietta (Shimp) Elwell.
Mr. Elwell was a sergeant in the 86th Chemical Battalion of the US Army and served during WWII. He was awarded the Silver Star for his gallantry in action against the enemy on December3, 1944. He was a registered master plumber in the city of Philadelphia and was self employed in the plumbing and heating business for 30 years, retiring in 1983. Mr. Elwell served as an elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church in South West Philadelphia. He was a member of Richmond Lodge #230, F&AM.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth P. Elwell who died in 2006 and his daughter Janet R. Elwell who died in 1972.
Mr. Elwell is survived by several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Miller-Sekely Funeral Home & Crematory, 130 North Market Street, Elizabethtown, PA 17022 at 11:00 AM. Friends may call on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Interment will take place in Glenwood Memorial Gardens, Broomall, PA In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Lebanon VA Medical Center, Hospice Unit, 1700 South Lincoln Avenue, Lebanon, PA 17042.
