Arthur J. Whitman

Arthur Joseph Whitman, 75, of Palmyra, passed away with family by his side in Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill on Sunday, May 19, 2013. He was born Thursday, February 10, 1938 in Newark, NJ to the late Leonard and Helen (Burk) Whitman. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Anna May (Walsh) Whitman.

Arthur retired in 1994 as Captain of the Belleville Fire Department, where he worked for 34 years. He proudly served his country in the United States Army and the Reserves. Arthur was a member of the American Legion, Quigley-Baum, Post 72. He enjoyed trains and assembling model airplanes. Arthur was an all around handyman and a loving family man. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter, Margaret A. Purcell and husband Jim of Cleona; 2 sons, Stephen Whitman of Summit, NJ and Brian P. Whitman of Palmyra; 2 daughter-in-laws, Linda Whitman of Parkville, MD and Lisa Papp of Belleville, NJ; 5 grandchildren, Jason and Kristopher Purcell, Scott, Jr. and Kerilyn Whitman, and Megann Whitman; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Scott J. Whitman.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, May 25th at 10 AM at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 245 W. Pine St., Palmyra, PA 17078 with Father James F. Podlesny as celebrant. Burial with full military honors will follow in Hershey Cemetery, Hershey. Family and friends are invited for viewing on Friday, May 24th from 2-4 PM and 6-9 PM at Rothermel Funeral Home & Cremations Services, Inc., 25 W. Pine St., Palmyra, and on Saturday, May 25th from 9 AM until time of services at the Church of the Holy Spirit.
