Arthur H. Haines
Arthur Henry Haines, 84, of Marietta, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, November 3, 2015. Born in Marietta, he was the son of the late Arthur Hammond and Eva (Nine) Haines. He was the widower of the late Doris (Rettew) Haines.
He is survived by two daughters, Beth A. O’Donnell, companion of Lindsay Smith of Columbia, and Vanessa K. Houseal, wife of Daryl of Mount Joy; five grandchildren: Tiffany Lewis, wife of Richard, Neil Rapp, Janelle O’Donnell, Natalie Fantom, wife of Brian, and Quentin Houseal; nine great grandchildren; brother John Haines; and sister Susan Moore, wife of John. He was preceded in death by his brother Harold Haines.
He was a member of Zion’s United Church of Christ in Marietta. Arthur was a 1949 graduate of Marietta High School, and a graduate of Lancaster Business School, and Franklin & Marshall College with a Bachelors Degree. He was a member of Pi Gamma Mu National Social Science Honor Society. He served two years in the Army Corps. of Engineers during the Korean War. Arthur was an accounting manager for the county department at Wyeth Laboratories for over 44 years, retiring in June of 1995, after only missing one day of work. He gladly offered to prepare income taxes for neighbors, friends, and family for many years. He was a member of the National Association of Accountants, having perfect attendance for 30 years. He was a charter member of the Marietta Planning Commission serving as secretary for 29 years, and the Marietta Jay Cee’s, having served as president and later as senator. He then served on the committee for the Lancaster Redevelopment Authority for many years. Arthur was very involved with his hometown, he was on the board of the Marietta Community House, treasurer for the Marietta Christmas Lighting Committee, committee member of Marietta Community Friends delivering baskets of food to those in need, member of the Marietta Restoration Association, treasurer of the Marietta Children’s Fair, and a founding member of Marietta Area Ambulance, serving on the board of directors for 33 years, chairman of the finance committee of the Marietta Susquentennial Celebration in 1962, and member of the Mount Joy American Legion and Maytown Historical Society. He was also elected Marietta boro and school district auditor as well as Donegal school district’s auditor. In the midst of everything he was involved in, he still found time to teach accounting at Penn State York College. Arthur was an avid reader and enjoyed walking, gardening, and spending time with his grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by his daughters and grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at Zion’s United Church of Christ, 3 S. Waterford Ave., Marietta, PA 17547, with Reverend Lawrence E. Riedel officiating. A visitation will be held the hour prior to the service from 11-12 Noon. Burial will follow in Silver Spring Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Smedley-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory, 29 N. Gay St., Marietta, PA.
