Anita L. (Spannuth) Alleman, 77, of Middletown, peacefully passed away with her children by her side on Thursday, February 17, 2022, at UPMC Community Osteopathic, Harrisburg. Born Friday, May 5, 1944, in Lebanon, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Spannuth Sr. and Dorothy (Strauss) “Dot” Spannuth. She was married to Arthur E. Alleman on December 18, 1965, until his death on Monday, November 27, 2017. Together they celebrated over 51 years of marriage.
Anita graduated from the Thompson Institute and retired from Penn State University, Harrisburg as an administrative assistant in the Division of Public Affairs. Anita grew up in Jonestown, PA, and once married, moved to Middletown. She was a long-time member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Anita lived her life through music. She began playing organ for St. John’s United Church of Christ in Jonestown while in high school and has continued to play for various churches and events throughout her life. She was a passionate organist and pianist, providing private piano lessons, and later becoming a volunteer providing seasonal music and hymns for the residents of the Frey Village Alzheimer’s unit and Traditions of Hershey. Anita’s love of music also carried over to additional church activities. She sang for many years in the church choir, played in the handbell choir, and became director of the children’s youth choir. Her volunteerism extended to taking her beloved certified therapy dog “Max” to nursing homes to interact with the residents.
Anita’s greatest love was for her family. She is survived by three children: Angela Deiling, married to Patrick, of Budd Lake, NJ, Annette Stewart, of Middletown and Kevin Alleman, married to Patricia, of New Cumberland. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Jordyn, Ian, Lorelai, and Nikolaus as well as Anita’s brother Herbert Spannuth Jr., married to Beverly, of Williamsburg, VA, and her extended family and caring friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
