The Reverend Mervin S. Gerhart, of Elizabethtown, formerly of Reading, died on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center; he was 88 years of age.
Rev. Gerhart was pastor for 28 years at St. Paul’s United Church of
Christ in Milltown, NJ until retiring as Pastor Emeritus in 1989. He
previously served the Orangeville, PA charge of the Evangelical and
Reformed Church for 2 ½ years. He ministered at St. Luke’s Church in Wilkes-Barre, PA for 7 ½ years, at which time he was Chaplain at the Veterans Hospital in Wilkes-Barre. During his ministry in NJ he
served on the Board of Trustees at Phoebe Home from 1965-1985. While in Milltown he was the Chairman of the Recreation Commission and President of the New Brunswick Council of Churches Board of Directors. In 1968 he traveled to Germany to exchange with pastors and shareideas and thoughts of their ministry.
A 1949 graduate of Franklin and Marshall College, Rev. Gerhart
graduated in 1951 from the Lancaster Theological Seminary. Born in
Reading, PA, he was ordained into the Christian Ministry in 1951 at
St. James Evangelical and Reformed Church in West Reading.
He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps in WW II, he
served in Italy from 1943-1945.
He was the son of Mervin H. and Lucetta (Kline) Gerhart. He was
married for 66 + years to Dorothy L. (Itter) Gerhart. Surviving are
his wife and three sons, Kenneth Gerhart and his wife Katherine, Leigh and his wife Geralyn, Paul and his wife Lori, six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11am on Friday, March 8, 2013 at
Christ Church United Church of Christ 247 South Market St.
Elizabethtown, PA. Burial will be in Trinity Tulpehocken Cemetery, Richland, PA.
Viewing will be from 7pm until 8:30pm on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at the Miller-Sekely Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. of Elizabethtown.
