Helen Hagy Wenger, 98, formerly of Elizabethtown, died peacefully at her Brethren Village home on Wednesday July 18. The daughter of the late Peter and Marie Hagy, she was a 1931 graduate of Ephrata High School and a 1935 graduate of Temple University with a B. A. in English. She had taught English at West Lampeter High School.
On June 6, 1937, she married the late Melvin M. Wenger with whom she shared 65 wonderful years of marriage.
A member of the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, she taught Sunday School for 15 years and also served as a Deacon. An avid reader, she enjoyed volunteering at the Elizabethtown Public Library and had also been a Brownie and Cub Scout leader. At one time, Helen was a member of the women’s curling team at Hershey Country Club and had participated in many curling “Friendlies.”
Helen was an active member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) and was an 84 year member of the DAR having had an ancestor who was a water boy in the Revolutionary War.
Helen was well known for her letters and postcards that she loved to write and send to all her friends and family, keeping everyone in touch.
She is survived by the following: a son Allen M Wenger of Hershey; three daughters Betsy (Mrs. Darwyn Shipe), Barbara (Mrs. Barry Shaw) and Dr. Lynda (Mrs. Bruce Limpert) all of Elizabethtown; 8 grandchildren: Karen Shipe Quinn, Greg Shipe, Jennifer Shaw Finch, Abigail Shaw Lowry, Andrew Wenger, Melanie Wenger, Brad Limpert, and Mark Limpert; and 7 great grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at the Elizabethtown Mennonite Cemetery. If desired, memorial gifts in Helen’s honor may be sent to Lancaster Farmland Trust, 125 Lancaster Avenue, Strasburg, Pa. 17579.
