Floyd H. Spangler
Floyd H. Spangler, 91, of Palmyra, peacefully went to be with his Lord & Savior Wednesday, September 26, 2012 in the Veterans Administration Hospital Hospice unit from advanced prostate cancer. He was born December 1, 1920 and was one of twelve children. Floyd was a happy man, always smiling and sometimes whistling. Surviving are his wife of 69 years Mildred, daughter Jane DelSordo, son in law James, grandson Michael Mater and wife Audra and great grandson Luke Mater, along with two younger brothers, Clyde and Bob and many nieces and nephews.
He went to a one room school house in East Hanover Township, walking to school after milking cows on the family farm where he grew up in Grantville, PA. He served in WWII as a military policeman, guarding German prisoners. He was in the Army three years, six months and seven days. He was a member of Gravel Hill United Methodist Church where he served the Lord in many ways, Sunday school superintendent for 21 years, taught Sunday school classes to youth and adults. He was an active participant on the Men’s Lenten breakfast committee for 36 years. He worked for Hershey Foods for 42 years and enjoyed 20+ years of retirement. He was a baseball enthusiast, taking bus loads of fans to the Phillies and Orioles games. NASCAR was a favorite and a trip to the Daytona 500 race was what was responsible for all the many trips he ended up planning and enjoying. He enjoyed traveling and planned 35 different bus trips taking people to different locations in the United States. He served on the Lebanon County Area of Aging advisory council for 6 years, was president of the Palmyra Senior Citizens for 10 years. In earlier years he enjoyed bowling and was president of the Blue Ridge Bowling league for 6 years. Floyd enjoyed gardening and grew many vegetables, especially tomatoes over the years and also had a red delicious tree that had so many apples on it one year that he needed eight 2x4’s to hold up the branches.
Family and friends are invited for viewing on Sunday, September 30th from 3-5 PM at Rothermel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 25 West Pine Street, Palmyra, PA 17078. Funeral Services will be held Monday, October 1st at Noon, at Gravel Hill United Methodist Church, 131 Gravel Hill Road, Palmyra, with Pastor Lynn Hackman officiating, with viewing from 11 AM until time of the service. Burial with military honors will follow in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Palmyra.
