Edward Paul Michalek, 85, formerly of Hershey and Palmyra, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 15, 2013 at the MS Hershey Medical Center. He was born Thursday, December 8, 1927 in Lebanon to the late John S. and Anna (Matula) Michalek. He was predeceased by his loving wife Louise (Sardino) Michalek; two brothers, Frank and Joseph Michalek; a sister, Regina Michalek. He is survived by a nephew, Brother Bruce Michalek, OFM; and a niece, Sister Mary Thomas Michalek OP; and many nieces and nephews from the Sardino family.
He graduated from Lebanon High School in 1947 and played basketball for Pleasant Hills Boys Club in the YMCA Student League. He coached basketball for BECK’S Ice Cream Team in the YMCA Student League, also coached Lebanon Catholic Juniors (7 th and 8 th graders) from St. Mary, St. Gertrude and Sts. Cyril and Methodius Schools of Lebanon in the Harrisburg Diocesan League. The creation of his team was a suggestion of Monsignor Weaver; Ed Sheey and Norbie Danz also played a big roll in organizing this activity.
He was employed at Quaker Alloy for 32 years from December 19, 1957 to his retirement in December 11, 1989. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Palmyra where he was an usher for 40 years. He was a Third Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of Liberty Fire Company, Annville Legion, and Hershey Italian Lodge. He played darts in the Lebanon City County League and Pool at the Hershey Italian Lodge. After his retirement, he took much pride in traveling with his keyboard and once month entertaining the residents of many nursing homes throughout Dauphin and Lebanon Counties.
Family and friends will always remember him as The Proudest #1 Notre Dame Fan!
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 19th at 10 AM at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 245 West Pine Street, Palmyra, PA 17078 with Father James F. Podlesny as celebrant, with burial following in Hershey Cemetery, Hershey. Family and friends are invited for viewing from 9 AM until time of the service at the church.  Rothermel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 25 West Pine Street, Palmyra has been entrusted with the arrangements.
